Kenyans Watched World Cup Final On Phones As Data Ran Cheap
The Kenya Internet Cost Hits So Low As They Watch World Cup At Low Price.
The nternet costs of telecommunication have hit a very low price in Kenya as telecoms fight for the fast-growing market in the country by allowing Kenyans to stream the World Cup live and other TV programs on their phones at a very cheap rate.
The rates have been falling for the last months as data become the new battleground among the service providers in the Eastern part of Africa, as telecommunications like Telkom, Safaricom, Airtel, Jamii Telkom and Zuku battles among themselves.
While the first three leading Telecoms have been focusing on mobile internet which has about 99 percent of subscribers in the country, while the rest are fighting it out in the broadband market. Kenyans are currently paying as low as 1 U.S. dollar for 2 giga byte (GB) of data, the price went down from over 10 dollars which they pay before for 2Gb. And for broadband, the telecoms are offering 10 dollars for unlimited internet services.
The low rates which telecommunications gives have come in for a rise in the use of those Telecoms with thousands of Kenyans have been able to stream live the World Cup on their mobile phones and watch videos for a cheap rate.
"This has been the best World Cup experience for me for the last decade," Johnson Onyango, a marketer in Nairobi, said Saturday as he was happy over the decrease of money spent on data.
